Why I started Ebb
Before Ebb had a name, I knew how I wanted it to make people feel.
Growing up, I was fascinated by the confidence clothing could carry. A doctor’s white coat commanded respect. A well-cut suit made someone look capable, composed, ready for anything. I imagined myself in those careers partly because of that feeling. Before I understood design, I understood that what you wear can change how you see yourself.
Hockey gave that instinct a purpose. As I moved through the levels of the game, activewear became my everyday uniform. Training, travel, recovery, time with teammates — we lived in it. But we’d complain about the quality of our team gear, then leave the rink wearing it anyway. It represented who we were, even when the clothing itself fell short.
What would we wear if the choice were entirely ours?
I started designing clothes I wanted to reach for. Pieces that could meet the demands of training and feel just as right walking into the rest of the day. A fit that made you stand taller. Materials worth wearing again and again. The kind of quality that could make something your favourite for years.
That is the ambition behind Ebb: to give athletes clothing that lives up to the effort they put into themselves — and the confidence to carry that feeling wherever they go.
We have to earn that place in an athlete’s life. Through every fabric, every fit, and every improvement, we’re building a brand people choose for themselves. Because the greatest compliment will always be someone opening their wardrobe and reaching for Ebb.
The story behind Ebb
Ebb began on a Saturday between games. While playing for the Calgary Hitmen, we had yoga sessions between Friday and Sunday games. At first, I dreaded them. But as the season went on, they became something I relied on. Yoga and breathwork changed how I felt, how I moved, and how I prepared to compete. I learned that being a hockey player didn’t mean I was too tough to slow down and listen to my body.
During one session, our instructor said, “Listen into the ebb and flow of your breath.” I didn’t fully understand the words, but I could feel exactly what she meant. That feeling stayed.
Two weeks later, I was sharing a hotel room with my teammate Carter Yakemchuk, who would become Ebb’s first ambassador. I’d been trying to name my clothing brand and getting nowhere. I closed my eyes to sleep. Then it came to me: Ebb.
I grabbed a notepad and wrote “EOB.” I didn’t even know how to spell it yet or what it meant, but in that moment, the future flashed before my eyes. I could see everything this brand would become. That vision has guided Ebb from the beginning.
